Who is the MarXman?
Marc Gilkes was born and raised in Queens, New York by Trinidadian parents. Influenced by gospel music early on, he fell in love with hip hop while watching Video Music Box hosted by DJ Ralph McDaniels. Marc was a published poet in high school, which led to spoken word years later at the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe. It was during this time at Hunter College that Marc adopted the moniker, “the MarXman” to represent his developing persona. After some time, he developed as a versatile figure in the creative community and immersed himself into the nightlife scene in 2007. As an event promoter and planner, MarXman has engaged numerous audiences as a host and event M.C. WORD(s), an English curriculum based on spoken word performance, was developed and taught in 2016, reaching students ages 8-18 all over NYC. The MarXman continues to evolve as a multifaceted entertainer with the gift of connecting to an audience. Music releases include the NeXt: the MiXtape (2010), the NeXt: the Album (2011), Days of Future Past (2014), and The Rehearsal (2016).
